What is the process for doing this? Does the screenwriter have to purchase the rights to the novel before they can begin adapting it? Do they adapt it and then try to get a producer on board? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, I am new to this and would like some direction. Thanks again!

You must own the rights before you write the script.

Usually how it works: A producer buys the rights to the novel (often before publication) and then hires a writer to adapt the book.

Write original stories.

On a completely different subject... Are you the same Martell who wrote the article discussing Alfred Hitchcock's film The Ring in the May/June issue of Script?

I really enjoyed that article. I wasn't even aware of that movie before and now I can't wait to see it.
